On 14th-16th May, the Level 3 Economics class took a trip to sunny Nelson to look at how businesses operate. The trip provided students with a chance to connect classroom theory with real-world business operations, while also enjoying some fun activities along the way.
Day 1:
We kicked things off with a visit to the Juicies factory, where students saw firsthand how production lines and supply chains operate whilst gaining valuable insight from their CEO, who gave up his time for us. We then headed to the zoo, where the highlight for many was seeing the pygmy marmoset, the world’s smallest monkey! Along with feeding and holding the keas.
Day 2:
The second day was packed with business insights and entertainment. We toured the Talleys (New Zealand’s second largest exporter) factory, a major seafood and food processing company, and saw what a day in the life looks like for a typical Talleys employee. We then headed off to the Pics Peanut Butter factory, where we learned about how Pics originated and how they grew to be the big company they are today. Then, the afternoon was spent at Nelson Fun Park, where students enjoyed mini golf, hydroslides, bumper boats, go-karts, and trampolining.
Day 3:
The final day was more relaxed, allowing students time to reflect on the trip and prepare for the journey home.
A huge shoutout to Sora Watanabe for capturing all the best moments and highlights on his YouTube channel ‘Sorazamurai’!! Be sure to check it out and relive the trip through his lens. (Don’t forget to like and subscribe!)
Overall, the trip was a valuable opportunity to see economic concepts in action, and understand the inner workings of some of Nelson’s key businesses, while also having a bit of fun.
