Lessons from the Coast

On Wednesday 17th September, 35 Level 3 Geography students set out on a field trip to explore coastal landforms and processes around Christchurch. We were treated to beautiful weather for most of the day, although the strong nor’easter at Sumner Beach gave everyone a good reminder of how powerful natural forces can be.

Students observed the different natural processes operating to create features such as South Brighton Spit, Rapanui (Shag Rock), and the dunes along the spit. At Sumner, we had planned to hold a volleyball tournament during lunch, but the wind made that more of a challenge than an option!

After lunch, we drove over Evans Pass into Lyttelton. The trip was a valuable opportunity for students to connect classroom learning with real-world examples.
