On Tuesday 10th March, Kaiapoi High School held its annual School Athletics Day. This day was run and organised by one of the Level 2 Physical Education classes and saw approximately 210 students taking part. This was our largest number of participants for a few years.

The day got underway at 9am with all of the participants heading off to their first age group events. The senior students did an awesome job of bringing back the dress-up culture, which brought another layer of festivity to the day.

This was an extremely successful day as athletes broke records and supported each other throughout the day. Congratulations to the following students who broke records, some of which were standing from a very long time ago.

  • William Harrison – U18 Boys High Jump – 1.80m (equalled the previous record)
  • Lily Morrison – U17 Girls Long Jump – 4.87m
  • Lily Morrison – U17 Girls Triple Jump – 8.92m
  • Cruz Ranwell – U17 Boys Javelin – 26.79m
  • Eshan Raja – U16 Boys High Jump – 1.74m

The day concluded with 100m sprint finals followed by an exciting 4x100m house relay. Kauri took out this year’s honours, followed by Mataī, Tōtara and Rimu. The atmosphere was electric as most of the school was out supporting and cheering on their house.

A huge thank you goes out to all of the teachers involved and students who helped with this event. Without everybody’s efforts, this event simply wouldn’t be possible.
