The Year 12 Economics class recently went to Wellington for a fleeting overnight visit. This trip began with a visit to the TradeMe offices where students learnt about the range of jobs that TradeMe has to offer and the different things they do with the 550 staff they employ. A highlight of this visit was the trip down the two storey slide which employees can use instead of taking the stairs.
Following TradeMe we went to Parliament, where we met Matt Doocey and he spoke to the group about what his role is as a Minister and the local Waimakariri MP. We were also lucky enough to sit in the Gallery and watch Question Time. Students were shocked to see how half of the politicians were on their phones, as well as people shouting over one another. A great experience for students to see this real life and a highlight of the trip for many. After Parliament we went to the Reserve Bank of New Zealand where students had an education about all things money and inflation.
The next day we went to Victoria University, where students had a taster lecture about macroeconomics and also were enlightened about different paths a BCom degree could take them. Students had a tour of both the Pipitea campus as well as the law school. This was a great insight for students to see what a university looks like on a regular day.
An amazing trip, with an awesome group of year 12 students. Lots of learnings, new experiences and fond memories out of the classroom created.
