We were privileged this week to welcome Professor Stephen Pawson from the University of Canterbury to our school. As a leading expert in Forest Health and Biosecurity, Professor Pawson delivered an enlightening presentation that left our students with a newfound appreciation for the natural world.
The lecture provided a comprehensive overview of the origins of nature, tracing the evolutionary timeline of forest ecosystems. A highlight of the session was his talk on the architectural structure of New Zealand’s native trees. Professor Pawson explained how these unique species have adapted to our local climate and geology, functioning as complex biological machines.
Our students were thoroughly engaged throughout the session, showing particular interest in the critical role of biosecurity—the science of protecting our unique landscape from invasive pests and diseases. The classroom was buzzing with energy as students asked questions about biodiversity and career pathways in environmental science.
