On Thursday 4th June, I had the privilege to attend the University of Canterbury Discovery Day for Year 12 students. The day involved sitting through mini lectures in real lecture theatres and listening to real lecturers. The mini lectures were really interesting, showcasing investigations we as students may come across when working for our degrees. My two favourite ones were the myths in the evolution of the English language, and how many people believe our competency in using it is worsening due to media, and the lecture on how social media is affecting us, which taught me a couple of new statistics skills to use in class, and showed some interesting findings from an investigation students participated in.
There were many different lectures on a range of subjects and topics, meaning nobody was ever really bored. I really enjoyed this event as I sat myself next to a lot of unfamiliar people, and was able to learn about their backgrounds – including how their school differs from ours. To a degree, it felt as if I truly was already in university. All the staff were really nice and friendly, and the lecturers were really cool. They spoke in an easy and understandable way, making note-taking really easy, and making it so the knowledge easily stays within our minds.
The event gave me a really good understanding of what university is like, how it runs, and who I may meet. It has made me feel much more excited at the idea of going to university.
